Erector spinae is a deep back muscle that emerges from a tendon connected to the sacrum’s crest in the middle (the part of the backbone at the level of the pelvis, formed of five vertebrae fused together). The erector divides into three columns, each with three sections, when it reaches the level of the small of the back. The muscle system runs the length of the back and is responsible for straightening and rotating it to one side or the other.
Some of the Best Spots are perfect because they are “surprising” — its fun to find a deep tissue massage spot that feels like it’s tailored to your pain in an unexpected place. Others are ideal because they are precisely where you want them to be — and it is such a relief to be able to handle them. Perfect Spot No. 13 is the epitome of a trigger point that is generally “right where I thought the problem was”: in the “pit” of the low back, at the bottom of the dense columns of back muscle beside the spine.

An 85-year-old man had a mass on the side of his body, which was discovered to be a blood clot, according to a case study (known as external jugular vein thrombus). During the previous year, he had received deep tissue neck massages, and the cause was found to be local trauma.
