During a massage, our brains are wired to sleep.
When you get a massage from an experienced massage therapist, it not only relieves muscle stress, but it also encourages the nervous system to enter its healing and relaxation mode, known as the “parasympathetic” process.
Simply put, the body’s systems need downtime in order to fully activate natural recovery, and sleep is that downtime. (It’s a virtuous loop, so getting a massage will also make you sleep better.)
A great massage signals to your body that it’s time to relax and recover. So it’s your genetics, not a lack of sleep that causes you to be tired after a great relaxing massage.
