There are some clear characteristics that any successful massage therapist must possess. Working with their hands must be a pleasurable experience for them. Working outside of an office, as well as having flexible working hours, is a plus. A successful massage therapist must enjoy being in the company of others.
Of course, we want all of our Massage Therapy students at Concorde’s Memphis and Southaven campuses to have fruitful and fulfilling careers. So we wanted to enlist some assistance and dig a little deeper to learn about the other essential characteristics of a successful massage therapist. Sunethra Man, Academic Dean and Director of Student Affairs at Concorde – Southaven, volunteered to assist us. She went the extra mile and came up with 14 performance characteristics for massage therapists.

As previously stated, a successful massage therapist must genuinely care for their clients’ health and well-being.
They must be able to meet clients’ expectations using a variety of modalities and approaches.
They must always maintain an ethical and competent atmosphere for the client.
Demonstrate a love for Massage Therapy as a healing art.
Be devoted to their job (punctual, dependable, flexible, honest and dictated to their clients).
The desire to promote oneself is crucial. A great massage therapist would be most effective if they can market their services and bring in new customers.
You must build a soothing environment. A good massage therapist uses a number of techniques to create a calming environment, such as dim lighting, soothing scents, and music.
A great massage therapist has outstanding interpersonal skills and can establish a rapport with a client that makes them feel at ease when receiving care. They are friendly and willing to answer questions and clarify what they are doing during a massage.
To ensure a positive experience, you must also have outstanding customer service skills and be able to accommodate a client.
Of course, proper technique is required. A great massage therapist is well-versed in the techniques used in various forms of massage.
A great massage therapist has outstanding manual dexterity and can execute the complex manoeuvres needed with ease.
You must have a lot of physical stamina and be able to stand for long periods of time while still putting in the effort that massage takes.
It’s important to have a deep sense of empathy. You should make an effort to use massage therapies to support a client’s well-being.
AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST…
During a massage, a great massage therapist will block out all other distractions and concentrate exclusively on the client. They are dedicated to delivering a pleasurable experience for their customers.
